Foundation of the company
Émile Laplante launches The Ideal Roofing Manufacturing Company in Ottawa and sets up shop in an old New York Central train station.
Canadian steel supplier
At the beginning of the Second World War, the company was buying steel from suppliers in the United Kingdom, but had to turn to the Steel Company of Canada (STELCO) Canada’s only steel foundry at the time.
New president
Émile Laplante retires from the company for health reasons and financial issues and sells the business to his brother Arthur and his nephew Marcel.
Death of the founder
Company founder Émile Laplante dies.
Expropriation
The company’s land and building are expropriated by the City of Ottawa.
New location
The company needs to relocate elsewhere in the east end of Ottawa in a new 10,000 sq. ft. building located at 1418 Michael Street.
New president
Company president Arthur Laplante dies at the age of 67. His son Marcel carries on as head of the company.
Fleet of trucks
The company purchases and operates its own fleet of trucks to ship its products to its distributor network across Québec and Ontario.
Expansion
The company expands and adds 15,000 sq. ft. of floor space to its Michael Street plant.
Second expansion
The company doubles the size of its plant on Michael Street, bringing the total area to 3,000 square feet.
Increased production
The company again expands its operations adding floor space and a second storey which brings its production capacity to 80,000 sq. ft. in the same location, on Michael Street.
Pocket Rib
The company launches it’s famous ’’Pocket Rib’’ steel panel especially designed for low-pitch roofs, another industry first.
Galvalume Plus
Introduction of Galvalume Plus zinc-aluminum alloy panels with laminate finish.
Colonial siding
Introduction of the Colonial siding as an economical alternative to traditional residential cladding, successfully imitating old-fashioned board and batten siding with its authentic rustic look and feel without maintenance.
Third expansion
To better meet growing demand, the plant is once again doubling the size of its facilities on Michael Street in Ottawa.
Ameri-Cana
The company acquires and installs two new steel roll formers and starts fabrication of its popular Ameri-Cana superior-strength full-hard steel core 80,000 psi panel for roofing and siding applications especially designed to withstand heavier loads, another industry-first achievement. Ideal Roofing the becomes the first in Canada to offer a 29-gauge metal roofing panel capable of withstanding loads of up to 80,000 pounds per square inch.
Commercial Rib
Market launch of our Commercial Rib panel, obviously designed to enhance the appearance of storefronts, side walls and rigid awnings of commercial buildings.
Major contract
The company wins a major contract for the supply of steel cladding on the exterior walls of the prestigious Palladium (later named by its sponsors Corel Centre, Scotiabank Place and Canadian Tire Centre), an 18,000 plus-seat stadium in Kanata, west of Ottawa, home of Ottawa’s first National Hockey League franchise, the Ottawa Senators. Construction began in 1994 and the new venue opened in January 1996.
Heritage and H-F Series
Launch of the new architecturally pleasing hidden-fastener Heritage and H-F Series steel roofing panel designed for high-end residential and commercial buildings bringing back the rich traditional style and appearance of standing-seam roofs.
Québec City sales office
Opening of a new Québec City sales office to better respond to the needs of a market in constant expansion.
New president
René Laplante, Marcel Laplante’s eldest son, takes over as president of the company.
Urban Accent siding
Introduction of the new Urban Accent Series™, for vertical or horizontal installations on fascia and soffits thanks to a unique concealed fastener system, sometimes used in combination with other cladding materials on commercial buildings.
Retirement and succession
Marcel Laplante retires and leaves the company in the hands of his children, René, Claude and Sylvie.
Death of Marcel Laplante
Marcel Laplante passes away at age 74.
Canadiana siding
Launch of the new Canadiana siding, especially designed to withstand heavy loads, which represents significant structural savings of lumber and metal. It is particularly adapted to commercial, industrial and agricultural uses.
Brampton plant
Opening of a new production facility in Brampton, Ontario and inauguration of our new Steel Service Center.
Wakefield Bridge
Market launch of the new Wakefield Bridge steel shingles, made at the Brampton plant. Wakefield Bridge steel shingles are available throughout Ontario, Québec, the Atlantic provinces and six New England states.
New steel deck panel series
Launch of our famous coated Steel roof deck, Floor deck and Acoustic deck panels for commercial and industrial uses at our new Brampton plant
Monteciano
Market launch of our new Monteciano Mediterranean-style steel roofing tile stamped in the traditional barrel-vault shape and much lighter than the authentic clay or slate tile.
Junior H-F
In response to popular demand, the market launch of our new Junior H-F steel roofing panel as an economical alternative to our high-end Heritage and H-F panel, with hidden fasteners and the same 40-year limited warranty.
Galanta
Market launch of the new interlocking hidden fastener Galanta siding available with wood grain embossing or solid colour finish seamlessly overlapping end-to-end for horizontal or vertical installation.
Moncton
Purchase of a parcel of land in Moncton, New Brunswick for the future construction of a new plant.
New president
Claude Laplante becomes President of the company and Philippe Laplante, now a shareholder, becomes Vice-President, Sales and Marketing.
René Laplante retires
After 22 years at the helm of the family-owned company, René Laplante moves on to a well-deserved retirement December 31, 2022.
Construction begins in Moncton
Construction begins on a new 85,000 sq. ft. production facility in Moncton.
New management team
President Claude Laplante forms a new management team composed of Philippe Laplante, co-owner and Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and Patric St-Denis, Vice President of Sales.
Moncton plant opens
Opening of the new Moncton, New Brunswick Ideal Roofing plant.
Acquisition
Ideal Roofing acquires Tri-Province Enterprises, de Moncton, a manufacturer specializing in structural steel products, rebar and wire mesh, steel roofing and siding and HDPE steel and plastic culverts.
Under the same roof
Tri-Province Enterprises relocates in Ideal Roofing’s new facility in Moncton.
R-Panel and Fundy Panel
Launch of two new steel panels: R-Panel with exposed fasteners and Fundy Panel which offers the look of a standing seam roof at a competitive price. Both are manufactured at our Moncton plant.

Our sales-related technical sales department includes a professional engineer and qualified technicians who are able to provide accurate job quotes and comprehensive cost estimates.
